A good strategy is usually to load up on one team that you think is going to do well, and then rack up the points when they win.

Having said that, I would totally go with Hemsky and Sykora for the Oilers. Have you seen them play yet?? They are completely on fire, doesn't look like they will slow down.

Smyth and Horcoff are great picks as well.

The problem with Jagr, Ovechkin, etc. is that everyone picks those guys. The key to a hockey pool is taking guys that don't cost you a lot of money (or whatever the point system is), and that do better than they are supposed to.

Look at Jagr for example. Is he going to have a good year? Probably. But, will he have a better year than last year? Probably not. Therefore, is it worth paying top dollar for a player that marginally gets worse?

Let's look at Pavol Demeitra and Patrick Elias. Are they going to have good years? Almost certainly. Are they going to be better than last year? Almost certainly as well - they didn't even play the whole season last year. Elias was on fire when he did play, Demeitra's on a new team on a line with Gaborik. Not bad I think...

More players worth choosing:
1. The Sedin twins (up with Nasland, going to get some points)

2. Kyle Wellwood (on the pp with Sundin, who has showed that he still has it. Wellwood passes well, and can score. You could say that he plays, ummm, WELL ;)

3. Petr Sykora/Ales Hemsky (I know I already mentioned them). But nobody is going to pick these guys unless you do. The Oil is going to be exciting this year...

4. Teemu Selanne. This guy can't be stopped. People also think that he's washed up. I say no way. He's just getting started.

Guys NOT to pick:
1. Ilya Kovalchuk. He's going to have a great year sure. But will he be better than last year? Probably not. Plus, everyone is going to want him. You'll have to pay too much to get him.

2. Jarome Ignila. Fantastic player. One of my favourites actually. But, everyone likes him, everyone will try to pick him, and he's not going to have the big year that he had 4 years ago..

3. Martin St.Louis. He won't find his scoring touch again this year. He's on the decline.

4. Jonathon Cheechoo. Had a career year last year, will he do as well this year? I don't think so.

5. Pavel Datysuk. Again, a great player. But everyone knows that. I don't think he'll make the top 10 scoring.

So, tell me how your pool goes. Good luck!

You gotta pick Jagr as your first pick. Second would be Joe Thornton. I'll give you a list of players you should add.
Ovechkin
Crosby
Sakic
Heatly

You get good forwards first, then goalies, then you draft D-Men, they are useless in a pool unless they are superstars like Lidstrom. TIPS Forwards- Choose non-injury plagued skaters. They must be consistent or the will slow it down. If they jave a great line then they get more points. They can assist more. Goalies- Choose a goalie who barley lets any goals in. Never choose a good goalie on a bad team, it must be a good goalie on a good team. D-Man- Only draft the best.

I would take Joe Thornton from San Jose with your first pick if your league includes PIMS and +/- along with goals and assists.
