Rainfall is measured by a rain guage, which is a container usualy about 150 mm in diameter.the top is funnel shaped so the rain runs into it,then you pour the rain into the gauge wich has graduation marks on it usualy in mm and inches. It is the diameter of the catchment container that is critical, and my 150mm is only a guess. Also the container has to be out in the open and away from any trees or builings that may restrict the catchment.

You can measure it yourself.Take any container with uniform cross sectional area from top to bottom(can be cubical,cylindrical..).Place it in falling rain open to sky say for one hour. The height of water collected in mm or cm is the quantum of rainfall over that period.
