I recently moved to an apartment without an insinkerator. I'm wondering how paranoid I need to be about not letting food particles go down the drain to avoid it getting clogged.

get a sink strainer. They have them in the housewares section of the store.Little stuff that wont clog the sink goes through the holes. Bigger stuff gets trapped, then you just tap the mess into the garbage can. Once a week or so , pour a pan of boiling water down the drain to melt any grease that may have got down there

No food matter, or more importantly, grease. When you rinse your dishes, make sure you have completely cleaned them over the trash. Use monthly a drain cleaner or bacterial preventor, so you will not have a drain clog. Very expensive to call a plumber.

I would not let any food particles go down the drain. Use your drain protector and if you don't have one, you can purchase one to protect your drain from becoming clogged.

Best wishes.
