Contrary to what many people say, I think a petite young woman looks nicest in a mid-calf-length dress (either straight-ish or a little more "swingy") and the pretty shoes with high heels or some style that adds height. The long dress creates the illusion of a longer body, and the shoes with height add to the look of a longer leg. Also, dressy shoes that are like sandals or other strappy shoes show the foot, which also creates the illusion of more "leg skin" (hence, more leg).
The dress needs to be simple and elegant, because a "big, heavy" dress with a lot of "stuff" could overpower a petite girl.
Wearing your hair up shows more neck, so between having more neck and more "leg skin", you create the illusion of a longer body - and then there's the long dress in between. Wearing your hair up also adds yet more height to the look of "simple and elegant".
I don't think short girls always look as nice in short dresses because a small dress can cut your length in half visually. There's "little head, little dress, little legs coming out of the dress, and shoes". It can look "baby doll-y", and many young women don't want to play up "cute" if they're small. You can go for some simple elegance instead.
The world is full of attractive young girls in mini-skirts, but I think if you aim for some simple elegance (appropriate for you young years, though) you may look just that much nicer.
If you're slender you should have no problem finding a dress that fits nicely - you just buy a small size (and some lines offer "peitite" as well). If you need a larger size width-wise, you should shop early and have the dress shortened to just the right length if you need that. Sometimes, though, with mid-calf dresses, another couple of inches in either direction don't make a difference.
If you're going for a floor-length dress, you have to do the same thing: Have it shortened, buy one that is simple and elegant and without a whole bunch of "decorations" on it, and wear your hair up and height-adding shoes.

I don't think being short should stop you in any way. The only thing I can tell you is definitely go with a knee-length dress because with all the dancing and running around, a floor-length dress is a pain. If you don't like showing off your legs for whatever reason, get the hem of the dress to your knees then a little bit of extra thin cloth to go down in angles to your ankles. I'm sure you know what style I'm talking about. As for getting a well-fitting dress, well, being 5"2 shouldn't stop you from finding a good dress. I wish you the best of luck.

Yes Girl! I'm 5'3 so it all depends on the weather and your gams! The fun part about being short is that u can wear a short cocktail dress and show off your legs making them appear long or wear heels in a nice flowing fitting dress...its up to u! But go for whatever compliments u the best.

I always wish I were shorter when I see shortish girls wearing a right at the knee dress with a bit of width to the skirt (either like full out with taffetta or just a full swing to it) with a pair of simple, high heeled(not chunky but not skinny), rounded toe shoe...sleevless would probably elongate, maybe boat neck...darn...I wish I had that outfit and was a bit shorter!!

i'm 4ft8 and i would wear something short that shows your legs. when i look at my wedding dress i think i look like a midged who's wearing a dress that is way too long. but when i look at a picture where i am wearing shorts or a short, tight skirt i look normal and less like a midget (no i'm not a midget, just short). the more leg the better. and verticle stripes of some sort help too, even if there are a few vertical pleats or embroitery or seams visible....

I think a babydoll dress would show off your legs and elongate them. Go to Nordstroms.com, Delias.com, Forever21.com, Wet Seal.com. I'm sure your local mall will have it somewhere in some store, rather than buying it online. Good luck!
