Just take those old records off the shelf
I sit and listen to them by myself
Today's music aint got the same soul
I like that old time rock n roll.....
And that says it all!!

I'll go by genre here. If I like a sufficient amount from a genre it’ll be in the list below. I’ll rank the genres based on how often I listen to them as compared to others in this list. Some of these may be sub-genres and they’ll always be shown as lesser than the major genre that they fall under simply because the major genre has more to offer (such as other sub-genres within that major genre–Case in point: Goth is a sub-genre of Alternative rock and Alternative Rock is a sub-genre of Rock in general). So the last genre listed gets my attention occasionally whereas the first genre on this list gets the lion’s share of my attention. There are some genres that I like a lot, but have only heard a limited number of songs. Consequently, I’ll rank those lower even though I may absolutely love the few songs that I’ve heard (Zouk is an example). OK? Here’s my list in rank order:
1. Rock
2. Alternative Rock
3. Doo-Wop (50's and 60's vocal groups)
4. Soul (50's into the 70's)
5. Rhythm & Blues (mostly 40's into the 70's)
6. Grunge
7. Synth Rock
8. Psychedelic (60's in particular)
9. Punk Rock
10. New Wave
11. Folk
12. Europop
13. Classic Rock
14. Disco
15. Surf
16. Funk
17. Blues
18. Rap
19. Rap Rock
20. World Music
21. Goth
22. Techno
23. Reggae/Ska
24. Reggaetón
25. Jazz (20's and 30's pop)
26. Big Band (40's pop)
27. Heavy Metal
28. Zouk
29. Country
30. Cumbia
31. Zydeco
For Nostalgia I would say the older songs in any category, but occasionally something new will also give me nostalgia. It may have something to to with the emotional contenent of the music.

I enjoy most kinds of music, but country and classic rock are right at the top of the list for me. I'm sorry to say I can't include rap or heavy metal, however. It seems more like noise than music to me. I've tried but I just can't get into it. I like pop, r&b, blues, good gospel, soft rock (elevator music, if you will), a good barbershop quartet and almost everything else. To each his own, I guess.

I like pretty much everything except country and pop.
I was raised on blues, jazz, folk, and doo wop, along with a lot of foreign music from Africa, Tuva, and Japan. Then I branched into rock, metal, and harcore, and recently broke into indie music.

Classical... it's so cool to hear songs I've played in orchestra on the radio, and it's super relaxing.
