I'm Asian-American -- half Filipina/half Chinese -- and I'm friends with Asians of different nationalities; actually I have friends of all races, whether Asian or not.
I think that sometimes, people of the same nationality hang out with each other just because for example, they grew up together and are comfortable with each other. However, I think it is sad when people of any nationality stick only to each other, simply to somehow 'compete' with other nationalities.
In my college, there is a Filipino organization, a Vietnamese organization, a Chinese organization, and a Korean organization, and all of these organizations are made up of multiple nationalities each. Many Asian students participate in more than one of these organizations even if they themselves are not of that particular nationality. There is also an Asian interest sorority (made up of all the above nationalities) and an interest group for an Asian interest fraternity (also diverse). Maybe it is just different at your school or in your hometown, as it might be in other places, but there IS Asian unity where I am!

Look towards history...Americans have such a small history, but for older cultures and countries its real easy to find bad blood. Nations typically made wars on their neighbors and committed long term atrocities against a lot of people. There is a lot of bad blood between a lot of older and ancient cultures and a lot of scores left unsettled. This typically leads to mistrust and negatively stereotyping of past foes. Icy relationships have always existed between feudal tribes of Asia and the impact is still felt today. Japan, Korea, China, Tibet, and Mongolia have all committed acts of war against each other and some of the aftermath is hard to let go for some. It usually takes the young to forget the past

I live in Asia and do look for people like me to talk to and learn from. I also mix with the people here.
Before I came to Asia I knew many from here and yes they do find their own kind but most also have friends and deal with the local people as well. It is the second generation that really starts to mix well with local peoples. By the third generation most do not speak their original language. It does take time to change.

ah... the elusive "C" & "Ktown" can be seen far and wide. I think it's that fact that people like to hang out with people that are similar to themselves, i.e. culturally and appearence-wise. I have a diverse group of friends, but it's nice to hang out with other Asians because you can complain and joke in a different way than with others. It can become annoying though because I have talked to some who refuse to be associated with other races, particularly white people. It's kinda messed up, but there's no helping it.

Your right they do. Maybe it's because they like to talk amongst themselves? My boyfriends Asian and your right he really only hangs out with his own type except the occasional person (and me his white girlfriend :-)
I asked him the same thing and he just shrugged.

the question is not why only asians hang out with asians, but why anyone of any nationality hangs out with his own natonality.
i guess they want to feel "at home"
i guess that's why we have "racism"

asians are too competitive at everything to be able to have real friendships and truly accept people of other cultures.
