If there is a real reason, yes; otherwise, they are showing off

Depends on the individual child. Do they do anything else besides go to school and go back home? (Like be part of a club that stays after school or something.) Have they ever needed a phone to call you in case of some sort of schedule change or because they missed the bus, but didn't have the means to?
If they don't/haven't, and chances are they would use the phone to just chat with their friends, you should probably make them wait until they're 13... Mainly because then they'll be going into high school soon (if they're not already there) and kids become more independent in high school; they usually do more things than just simply go to school and come back home, like sports or clubs. They should have the means to call you in case the club's meeting date was changed or sports practice was cancelled... Or if they're going to stay after school to finish up some classwork!

A child that is 'wired' doesn't need a cell phone in her life controlling it! However, it will be very useful at middle school if an emergency pops up, because in my neighborhood they do frequently.

Use a system, pay for service during the winter when there's not much to do and let it go in exchange for family time in the summer.

I hope this helped!

yes, as long as you get one of those plans that only allows certain numbers to be called, like home, work or parents cell phone. Important in case of emergency. Kids that age don't need it for social reasons and they can't really find steady work to pay a high phone bill, so stick with something simple!

Unless there is a good reason no. My 15 year old wants one. No way. If the 12 year old child had a lot of after school or church activities. Or if they were really mature and responsible yes but otherwise no.

Nobody should have a cell phone or a computer until they're over 18 and have moved out of their parent's house.

Yes, If it is affordable option most defiantly. My 11 yr old son has one he has no excuse not to call me. With the lack of pay phones in our area and some of his friends do not have home phones or have teenager sisters that are always on the phone. My son knows it is not to be used except for calling home. No friends are allowed to use it unless they need to call there parents. No calling friends except free nights and weekends. So far he has followed the rules. I can always contact him.

No, I didn't have a phone till i was a freshmen in high school. Kids don't have unexpected practices, and if so they inform parents before hand. Also, they don't have to go to work at the last minute and such. In middle school, kids who had phones were irresponsible with it and just wanted to show off.

I would only recommend a cell phone with a card. That limits the use.

Yeah, if there is a way you can set up the phone to only receive incoming calls. Otherwise, that kid is going to run up a lot of minutes that YOU are going to have to pay for, all the while talking about nothing.
