The Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) was an outgrowth and expansion of the Federal Relief Agency, (F.E.R.A.), set up by President Herbert Hoover. It was an autonomous agency. The largest new Deal agency, it was set up by president Roosevelt and funded by Congress. Its head was Harry Hopkins, a very close confident of the president. It ran from 19635 to 1943.

Before the National Rifle Association came along N.R.A. stood for National Recovery Act. Started by Roosevelt it was an unbrella under which the W.P.A., the P.W.A.(Public Works Administration) and the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) existed.
