Incandescent lights are meant to be kept on for limited amounts of time. You save money by turning these off when you are not using them, even if only for a short amount of time.
Fluorescent lights (old style ones) are designed to be left on for extended periods of time. You actually save money by leaving these on instead of frequently turning them on and off.
Your best bet is to purchase those spiral fluorescent bulbs (I'm sure you've seen them). They are called CFLs (Compact Fluorescents) and use 20 to 25% of the electricity used by an incandescent bulb to produce the same amount of light.

I have heard that as well. I do believe it to be true. Switching a light on and off constantly will increase your electric bill because each time you turn a light on, you are creating an action. I leave a small lamp on at home at night, but I do not turn on my ceiling lights unless it is necessary. I have a fairly low electric bill. I keep two 15 watt night lights on all the time. My opinion only. Go with what you believe is the correct response.

Leaving a light on is a waste of your money. A gain by your utility company and a loss for mother earth. Invest in the new bulbs, they will save you money and reduce pollution in the world.

Wrong. Living the light on wastes energy thus losss of electrical energy equates to wated moneywaste money. Power flows one direction so turn lights on when you need it and turn it off when you dont need it. What you say is true but in gas motors and cars but not true when it comes to electrical power and power source.

Norman is right, it is silly; however, if you have florescent lights, there's some thought that frequent turning on and off lessens the bulb and balast life.
