I think legalizing marijuana for medical use is great. I don't know much about the subject, nor much about marijuana, as I have never used it myself, but have experienced chronic pain. I have never taken anything stronger than Tylenol 3 (after surgery), but may consider marijuana some day if medically necessary.
Having said that, I will go out on a limb and say something that will probably be very unpopular: Legalization of marijuana for anything but medical use, would be immoral and stupid. It is a drug. Drugs make you behave like someone you are not. They are mind altering. You would say and do things while high that you would not when you are sober.
Just in my work place alone, I know of at least 3 people who are chronic users, smoke up in the parking lot at lunch time and smoke it on the way to work while they are driving! I am on those same roads too! It scares the hell out of me!

My cousin has a license to grow & smoke pot (I'm Canadian) I'm not totally convinced that his particular ailment (a genetic stiffness of the joints and what's called Restless Leg syndrome) quite justifies it...but I think that for things like combatting nausea in chemotherapy patients or whatever, if it's effective why not? I mean most of the drugs used medically are derivatives of opium, and no one has a problem with that, even though I would consider them to be way 'harder' drugs.

I think that if it is used for medical purposes it should be legal. I have some friends that are dealing with some medical issues, including myself, and I know that it helps them.

I certainly wish they would legalize it. I think the only reason it's illegal is because the government doesn't make any money from it.
Look at alcohol & cigarettes.
