If the African Caucasion immigrates to and becomes a citizen of the U.S.A., then by rights he or she would be an African- American. But few radical-thinking people like the idea because the term was originally meant for black people to enjoy that moniker--as politically correct it may be.
It's time we rid ourselves of this hyphenation-American complex and simply be known as Americans.
I wrote a short story with that topic in mind, but haven't had it published yet. Not all literary agents would want it either.

No the white person would not be "African American"....The reason for that has nothing to do with being white, is the simple fact that africa is a continent, the person would identify with whatever country they were from...The reason why "African Americans" call themselves "African American" is because they dont know what Nation or Country They Originate from so they coined this term to have some sense of belonging.

Umm...You were born in Africa then you are African. Then you move to America so then the answer is American. At least that is my guess!

That's the only way to be an african-american is to be born in africa then move to the US.
However in the pc world that we live in today you have to be black to be an african-american.

great question. So if u are born in Mars, and come to america u will be a mar -american? Or perhaps an american born in africa to american parents or an african born to american parents....now I am confused............lets ask bush............so that we avoid discussion on passing bills in the white house for war.

I think yes, you are an African-American, but it would just be funny to hear until you got used to it.
I don't know why it would denote only to people with dark brown skin.
