get HP.
I got one myself and they are pretty good laptops.

Get a MAC! They run Windows XP as well now with bootcamp!
I found the Toshiba to place the keys on the keyboard in a stupid fashion.
Never used a HP. Have used a Dell, and are quite good - albeit a bit bulky. Acer are good as well.
Asus are supposed to be good value.
Centrino processors seem to be slow for Java programming though. (Using Java Sun Studio). However, the core duo's may have improved things a bit.
Edit: I might add that I have a Dell with a Centrino processor and Java Sun Studio is PAINFULLY slow! My desktop PC runs it at a good speed, but the laptop is so slow it is unusable. Both computers have similar specs (RAM, CPU speed, HDD etc), but the notebook is a Centrino and the desktop is a P4. The Dell was purchased earlier this year, and is a high end model.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L25. It is at the low-end on price. I was warned when I bought it that the memory was short. I recently had more memory added to it, because it would freeze up occasionally, if I had 4 or 5 screens going. It has a 55 gig hard drive and came with only 256 MB memory. It now has 700 MB memory, and is much faster and never freezes any more.

Toshiba, if you like light, crummy laptops; HP, if you want bulky, but useful ones. :)

Which model? You need to see which has the faster cpu, most memory, biggest hard drive. Compare the two and their options as both brands offer several models.

Try an EMachines. My brothers had one for a while now, he loves it, had absolutely no trouble, and got a great price. It's worth a look see.
