IT was a word derived from the word *****. That gradually through accent and mispronounciation by mostly white slave owners, turned into a very mean word referring to Black people. I am sorry anyone of any color uses it.

Interestingly enough here in Trinidad & Tobago, a person who is a descendent of Chinese and African will often refer to themselfes, jokingly as a 'chigger', I kid you not.

The word is offensive because of the connotations, to disempowerement and slavery. An individual who was a slave was not a person but a n***er, they did not have a name and were all called boy, irrespective of their age. As it was some white people who owned the slaves, it is still regarded as offensive to say boy or ni**er.


Imagine if you called someone a dog - you are saying they are not fit to be part of the 'white' human race.

As a word, it is a derivative of the spanish ***** - black man and negra, black women - which are not very offensive, just descriptive.

You might be interested to know that in 18th centrury Trinidad you would be classified as French Creole, and no longer a slave because of your white genes.

during the early American fur trading days (apox. 1810- 1835), mountain men referred to just about every one by nigge*, including themselves, each other, the French, and the local native tribes. I have read journals from Jed Smith and Jim Bridger and others, all white men, who throw the word around pretty much the way people use the word "dude" today. Oddly enough there were very few blacks in the fur trapping areas.
why it became a negative word exclusively used for blacks, I don't know.
I second the opinion that it is used mostly out of ignorance, and the people who use it, regardless of their color, should be ignored.

I'm not sure why black people have a problem with white people saying it. I do hear black people saying it. I think what you should do is just not use the word at all. I think it just sounds bad what ever the color of the person is that says it. Some words just sound bad and that is just one of them. You can just be a better class of person by not saying words that anyone thinks is offensive. In other words, don't use foul words or street language at all. That will always make others look up to you and make you a better person.
