It's very easy, really.

For most women it's easier to insert the tampon while sitting on the toilet, but it can be inserted while standing with one foot propped up.

Choose the correct size for your flow. Choose "Regular" on light days; "Super" on moderate days; "Super Plus" on heavy days. Your tampon should provide protection for about 4 hours. Remove the tampon and insert a new one at least every 4 hours. You can 'over night' with a Super and a pad.

Insertion: Remove the wrapper. Insert the applicator as far as it will go and push the plunger. Remove the applicator, leaving the tampon in place with the string outside the vag.

Disposal: No one needs to know when a woman is having her period. Do NOT flush tampons in the toilet, even if the package says it's okay. Wrap used hygiene products securely in toilet paper before putting it into the trash.

I went into more detail here than everyone else because there is no such thing as a dumb question in my book. If you have an older female friend that you are comfortable with you can ask her about things like this.
