YES, it sometimes mean it is overloading or it has been turned on for too long. If the computer gets too hot, it can acutally burst into flames and create an electrical fire.

What kind of smell? If it smell like melted wires then turn it off and get more cooling support for the computer. Take it to the computer technician to disgard any dangerous defective hardware.

You can leave a normal running computer on FOREVER, without it overheating. However, yours is NOT running normal. Sounds like you've got a lot of dust build-up inside and also blocking the ventilations. Unplug your computer and clean that sucker. If you find it was dirty and things were blocked, then you can turn it back on after you clean it and see if it's better. If you find it doesn't need cleaning then leave it turned off and call a doctor! good luck :-)

If it's a burning smell then I would turn it off right now and bring it in somewhere later to be looked at. As said above, it can cause a fire.
Not only that but it can ruin your data and anything else around your computer(e.g. your house, people, pets)
So, be safe.

In any case, a responsible and careful approach would definitely tell you that you should turn it off and have it checked.

Extremely. It is a fire hazard, turn it off, unplug it from the mains and call your technician.
