It is an original primate (ape like) behavior. As apes, we signal one another by waving our arms in the air. Very common among our kind of mammals. Just like smiling.

Try flipping people the bird instead. We have physical motions that mean and have been interpreted to mean various things. We are not just a verbal animal.
