Back in the old days, as when my dear parents were young, gloves were almost always worn. It was considered proper. When I was a child, we always wore gloves to dress up an outfit. Alas, just one more thing that today's society has discarded.
Did you know that cars used to have a place where a small vase was attatched? You could put a flower in it that you picked along the road. Stick with me kid, I'll teach a bunch of things from the good old days!!

Glove Compartment

The name derives from the original purpose of the compartment, to store gloves. In most vehicles, the glove compartment closes with a latch, with the option of being locked with a key (often necessary when using valet service, or when parking while the convertible top is down). Gloves were originally considered necessary equipment in early cars, many without a hard top, to prevent the cooling effect of fast moving air from freeze numbing the drivers hands.

A glove compartment is occasionally referred to as a "jockey box," especially in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Because the glove compartment replaced tool box that all cars used to have. Driving gloves where used back when a crank was used to start a car. The gloves and the crank were kept in the tool box. When the tools were no longer specific to the car and the crank was gone the tool box was replaced by the rumble seat and the glove compartment was created.

Back in the first days of cars, they had no wind screen or roof. You had to have goggles and gloves. The glove compartment was to give the driver a place to put them out of sight so they would not be taken. Remember, gloves were good to have to; Start the car at the crank. To keep ones hands warm, as there was no heater either. To keep the bugs and such from hurting your hands. etc. I hope this has helped you.

Because back in the day, people wore gloves to drive. Hence glove compartment is where they kept their driving gloves.

Because back when cars started out men would wear gloves to drive. They also helped keep your hands clean when you crank started the cars. The car makers put this small box in the car either in the dash or by the seat to store these gloves. The gloves were large in size. They would go up to just below your elbow and were to bulky to be carried on your person. Thus the name glove box.

In one of the older cars, can't remember which, Model T or Model A the drivers always had wore gloves, maybe both. But they needed a place to keep their gloves, so they invented the glove box and the name has always stuck

The original first cars were "open -air" and a driver/passenger wore a dust cover coat, gloves and goggles to protect themselves against the very dusty (or muddy) dirt roads, The glove box was actually an excellent & practical idea--store the smaller iitems there!

I think that term came from way back in the early 1900's when drivers wore gloves and when they weren't driving they put their gloves in there
