It certainly is. In fact, the US was the origin of the idea that became the UN. The reason that these efforts are so important to us is that a stable world is definitely in our best interest. For instance, during his presidency, Clinton orchestrated talks between Israel and Palestine. If he had managed to negotiate peace between those nations (unfortunately, the Israeli guy was assassinated), it would have gone a long way towards stabilizing the Middle East. A stable Middle East would be awesome for the oil-guzzling nation that we are.

Mulitnational talks also focus on getting countries to agree to measures that would be helpful worldwide. For instance, the nuclear test ban treaty has at least seriously slowed worldwide nuclear productions, and various ecological treaties are attempting to slow global warming and save species from extinction.
