I would not advise you to use tampons if you are not sexually active. Perhaps you are having a hard time inserting them because you are still a virgin and if so I would not encourage you to insert anything at this point.

I am a mother and most of the other moms that I know are not big on letting their virgin daughters use tampons. Does your mom know that you are using tampons? If so then ask her to get a smaller one or try a different brand. Some brands have tampons for teens or slendar, slik applicators that goes in easier.

Also don't use tampons if your flow is really light or if you are going off because it will get stuck and you will have to sit in a tub of water to moisten it to get it out.

since the other people have answered your first question, i'll answer the second.
just bring it up casually, your period is YOUR responsibilty. theres some risks for using a tampon. you have to be responsible enough to know when to change it...wearing it for too long will cause problems. just tell her that you'll be careful and responsible

KY jelly or the store brand equivalent.

Also try standing, not sitting.

You can use a little vasoline on the tip of the tampon - that will help.
