at 2:30 AM and borrow cell phones from strangers on a sidewalk? Wouldn't just a tiny bit of common sense go a long way in preventing crimes of this kind?

Now adays you aren't really safe anywhere but to add drinking to it, which lessens your logical thinking, and add darkness, which helps hide wrong doings makes it even worse.

Most schools tell their students to always go to bars and clubs with friends to make it safer. It helps prevent things like this but also helps them make better choices rather than going home and sleeping with anyone and everyone. With crazy people out there you never know what could happen so it's great to have someone watching your back. If you're too drunk your friends can take you home, if you've been slipped something your friends can tell and take you home, and someone is less likely to attack a group rather than someone alone.

This issue has been discussed over and over again but some people think it could never happen to them. I had more sense than that when I was 15. Now being 24 I rarely drink at bars and if I do it's a weak drink. Better safe than sorry.

It sounds like that person had too much to drink-losing touch with command sense.
