I haven't had any surgery (yet), but I'm having problems with grinding pain. If you've had this injury please share info.

There are no "pieces". Your anterior cruciate is a ligament, and ligaments are kind of like rubber bands in the body,,,,Imagine taking a rubber band stretching it a little, then taking scissors and cutting one side - The two ends pull away from each other. The same thing happens inside your body when you tear a ligament or tendon. Once this happens, you have cut off blood flow into the ligament, which keeps it healthy, and the tissue begins to "necrose", or die. After a long period of time, such as the 6 years you describe, the ligament deteriorates to non-existent. There are two ways to treat surgically, one is with a cadaver graft or another is a xenograft (animal graft transfer). Left untreated, pain will continue, likely get worse with activity, and eventually become arthritic

ACL=Anterior Cruciate Ligament
It is torn and can be repaired,.

the "pieces" are floating around in there. that would explain the grinding pain.

YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD THIS REPAIRED 6 YEARS AGO! This will lead to arthritis. Your bone is rubbing against bone, and that's why you're in pain. GO GET THIS REPAIRED A.S.A.P!
