Would you make laws not to have more than one baby like China?
Or Would you rather have to pay more tax?
Any more ideas?

'heyrobo' do u know how serious overpopulation is for India and all of us?
They have over 1 billion people squased in India. I think you should think about their poverty and hunger that can be reduced a lot just by decreasing the population.

Why India? Do they want to decrease their population?
Why don't we do that here too? We have an exploding polutaion also. It doesn't seem like it, but there are many families that have five or six kids. I worked with 2 (out of 10 people in the office) men who both had 5 kids each.
If you have 5 kids and each of your children has 5 kids (and so on and so on), after 4 generations you have approximately 390,625 extra people. After 5 generations you have approximately 152,587,890,000 people. This is totally unreal with death of children and the fact that not everyone will have children or even 5 children, but it does show that having more than 2 children increases the world population dramatically. After 5 generations of people having 3 children, you have 6,500 people.
If you only have 2 children the population stays constant or slowly decreases because of death...

I thought all the indians were already coming to the US on H1B visas...how is the population still increasing?
are they creating more then they are exporting?
but in seriousness, the "tax" is'nt really working in China. People who can afford "the tax" in China just pay up the tax now a days. China is now at the point where they have a growing middle class, more and more people can afford to pay the child tax there. Not that India is quite there yet, but they too are on the economic growth cycle, and while the tax in the long run could be good for the economics in India, the tax wont work to curtail pro-creation.

As stated elsewhere, why India, the problem is world wide. There is no quick solution to the problem. A major public relations campaign to encourage only 1 child per couple would help. It probably would need to be connected to some kind of significant annual tax incentive. And it all fails anyway if you can't get ALL of the churches and religions to come on board with the idea. It only takes 1 yob say "be fruitful and multiply" to screw the whole thing up.

Pakistan had a few ideas, back when they were starting their nuclear weapons program.
But, as India continues to develop, parents will probably have less children. They'll be more secure knowing that the few they have will be more likely to survive into adulthood, and a growing affluence will allow them to plan for some kind of retirement without relying solely on their kids for sustenance. This is generally how it has worked for all the developed, industrialized nations.

First step I think, would be birth control. Not necessarily with only one child, like in China... but with teachings of sex education in grade school like we have here so that the young ones would be more aware of how life is started. Kinda like when our children bring home the letter that we are supposed to sign in order for them to learn about the responsibility of raising a child, especially when they would have to take care of him/her in such a poverty stricken country as theirs. Really, it just needs to be such a simple thing, but in those countries it is the lack of money, and knowledge. I work for an organization that deals with the 3rd world countries, and I see every day how this is such a problem in India. It is quite a sad thing.

Well considering many Australian banks and major companies are outsourcing call centre operations to India because of the cheap labour, thousands of Aussie's are either losing jobs, or just missing out on them.
If you want to decrease India's population - just get our very passionate Union members to go there and sort them out. If you know what I mean.

I would do what China has done. It is social suicide to let a population just expand without doing anything about it.

I wouldn't decrease India's population. Indians are wonderful people--I'm married to one. Whatever you are, I would decrease your population based upon your implications. If you're Indian yourself, then you should question your own identity.
