Protecting you computer should be done in layers. That way if one layer is breeched it can fall back to the next.
1) Start with an Antivirus. Only one thought. A second one will cause a conflict.
2) Second a Firewall program will stop any malware that gets onto your computer from transmitting your Data onto the internet.
3) AntiSpyware. As much as your system resources can stand. I run 6. 3 active (Defender, Spybot and Spyware Guard) and 4 manual (AdawareSE, Ewido, a², and Spyware Blaster).
4) Router. Whether Broadband or Dialup a router can be very effective in blocking hacker. On dialups look for a model with a RS-232 serial port. They can support an external dialup modem. With this model if you go broadband later it is as simple as connecting to the Ethernet port.
5) Make sure Windows, Linux, or Mac operating system is fully updated with all patches.
6) Set your self a limited user account on your computer. This will limit how virus can act on your computer. In my case I do not allow programs to be installed under the account I use to access the internet.

I provider a few links for you.

You can stop your computer from being hacked by.
1)setting a poppup blocker on..
2)not downloading anything that makes you shut off your poppup blocker to use it. ie:aim/aol.. this may alert someone to hack onto your comp.
Or if you want to download things similar to AOL or AIM..
if suggest you buy a used computer and monitor for fairly cheap and use it for those downloads.. You should do this for then there wont be anything for the hackers to hack onto.. or simply use one of your children's comp. or the library's..

1) Go to spywarewarrior.com and ask for help locking down your PC. There are MANY services that run in the background of your OS that do not NEED to be running and shutting them down can help protect your system. There are many LEGIT security applications that are free and spywarewarrior.com tells you about the them AND warns you about the fake programs out there.

2)Set your adult content filter in IE and password protect it. It will block a lot of bad sites, and you will always have the option of allowing specific sites if it blocks something you want to visit.

3)Get a HARDWARE firewall as a first line of defense to a software firewall on your PC. Many major AV companies have Internet Security programs that include a software firewall in ADDITION to their virus, spyware, adware, malware protection.

4)Always double check your security apps by using online scans from competing companies. If you run Norton Internet Security 2006, go to Trendmicro.com and run their free online scans and/or Kaspersky.com. These are three powerful security companies, so between all of them you can feel pretty safe. Setting one of these as your homepage will reduce your exposure to potentially malicious advertising at log on, and encourage you to keep your system clean. You can alywas use your favorites to navigate the web. I have microsoft update as my personal home page on my home PC and Symantec.com as my homepage at work.

5)Do NOT allow file sharing software on your computer EVER, and NEVER open files or links that you do not KNOW are safe.

6)NEVER use an account that has Administrator rights for surfing the web, checking e-mail, etc. Make the password on your Administrator account EXTREMELY LONG AND COMPLEX.

7)Do NOT leave your computer online if you are not using it. No one can hack your computer if it isn't on or online!

8)Make the password for the account you use to surf the web long and complex. Even though the account will not have admin rights, there is no logic in using simple passwords. Also for this account and your Administrator account, you should change your passwords often. You can bounce between two for the sake of ease and still be extremely well protected.

9)Do not allow other people to install applications on YOUR computer without your direct consent and involvement. If they want to check their e-mail or go online make SURE they use the limited user account and know you would prefer that they use extreme caution when it comes to downloading files and visiting web sites.

10)ALWAYS keep ALL of your software applications updated, including the applications you do NOT use if you leave them on your machine. If it is still on your machine it is a potential security loophole. Many applications will run as soon as a set condition activates them, and this is how many attacks get in without direct user interaction. Update to the latest version of your applications as well, many times security patches are ONLY released for the latest version of the software application.

**I was writing this while acklan was writing too apparently, sorry for the repeat info... Great minds think a like ;^)

first element is disconnect your pc from the internet ASAP. If somebody has hacked into it, then you definately decide to disconnect them so as that they could't do from now on injury, scouse borrow your information, passwords, examine your email, and so on. There are 2 ideas. a million) acquire some anti-undercover agent ware courses and attempt to apply them to scrub any undesirable stuff off your pc. some stable ones to aim are Malware Bytes and great Anti undercover agent ware. this could fix it, yet you may never somewhat be advantageous if those courses have been given each and every thing. 2) the extra beneficial selection could be to create a backup of all your significant information to DVD, exterior tensechronic, and so on and reinstall your working device. reckoning on your pc, which may be so ordinary as putting the fix CD and clicking by way of a wizard or as complicated as setting up the working device, downloading and setting up gadget drivers, downloading application updates, and so on. it somewhat is an entire day's job. continually run antivirus and antispyware courses and shop them up as much as now. Likewise, you're able to be able to desire to continually shop your pc up as much as now with the maximum modern Microsoft updates. shop your internet browser up as much as now, besides as any plugins which incorporate Flash and Acrobat. holding all your application up as much as now reduces your attack floor and makes it extra durable for somebody to hack your pc back.
