Mom said engine died and gas peddle dropped to the floor.
Father-in-law suggested ? coil ? Pulled old one, replaced with NEW coil, still nothing.
Then it was suggested that distributor cap needed to be replaced, got a new one and STILL nothing. The old cap however was REALLY worn. When I pulled the old one to put in new one, I though FOR SURE it was the problem, but no.
Ck'd fuel, and it getting the gas, presures there...
Plugs are alright, a little build up but I've seen worse work.

Linkage, yeah I checked that too. Everything's connected, and it's not STILL on the floor. Just happened at the time of the engine quitting.

Sorry, it wasn't the Dist. cap that I replaced, it was the Rotor Cap. I'll try cranking it with the Dist. cap off, hopefully that will give some new info... thanks goes out to the 'old mech' .

Can you make the engine "hit" by putting a small amount of gas in the carbureter, (or throttle body with fuel injection). This should give you a "burst" of power for a short time as the gas burns. If nothing happens, take the distributer cap off and watch the rotor (while somebody cranks the engine), does it turn, or turn jerky?? If so you could have a bad timing chain, or timing belt! If it has jumped a couple "teeth" it will not let engine run, as the fuel, compression, and spark are not reaching the right place at the right time!
If the engine does try to run for a few seconds, it is carburation or fuel- (mixing air with gas). And you have a fuel dleivery problem (even if the gas is there at the "check" point with fuel injection).
As for the gas pedal problem, -maybe it was just reflex action on her part, and nothing with the throttle linkage at all! Giving you a "all ok" check when you looked it over!

Sounds lke preventive maintanence is not a strong point for your family. i agree the accelerator cable is broken causing the pedal drop. But the no start is another cause. It should still run without a cable. Start checking for spark and fuel delivery. Fuel pump may have gone bad, a fuel pump relay as well. remember you need 3 things for an engine to run, spark, fuel and compression. So start checking everything in that order. Just you telling us that the cap was badly worn means that this car has hardly seen any preventive servicing and the filters were probably never changed.
good luck.....

If you have fuel and spark the timing belt is worn and probably jumped a couple of teeth. Get it replaced if it has fuel and spark. As for the fuel peddle dropping to the floor the linkage broke.

The problem seems to be two-fold,the gas pedal must always have a feel of movement, and if engine is cranking there must be ignition spark and fuel delivered to the engine. If any of these conditions are not present ,then its possible to find the problem.I suggest verifing pedal travel/ignition spark first. If both are present then your problem is fuel related.

I'll bet the cable running from the gas peddle to the throttle broke. The same thing happened to me; move the gas pedal up and down by hand and have someone watch the throttle link by the engine. If the throttle link doesn't move the cable is broken.

First, fix the gas peddle, cable or return spring in the lever shaft broke, if the lever return spring broke that keep the lever to a WOT, the ECU sees that as a "Clear Flooded" mode and keep the Engine from starting.
2nd, check your TPS, be sure that is not damaged.

Depends on how may miles are on it. If you are getting spark and gas, then if could be a timing chain if it is over 180,000 miles.
