If all things die, and nothing is immortal, would that frustrate and depress you?

Do people believe in God, because they have undeniable proof, or is it derived from the fear of meaninglessness?

Funny how I came across your question here, which depicts exactly what I am feeling. Everything seems to be perishing right before my eyes: My wealth, my marriage, my family, my friendships, my health. The thing I fear the most is the grim possibility of my impending death, but it is still the thing I welcome most, if all else in my life has perished. The thought of my non-existence therefore brings me happiness when I face the other choice, which is existing in a world where everything and everyone that meant something to me, has perished.

...and it is strange that I do not turn to God in my hour of darkness...not because I don't believe in God...but the idea of God just does not comfort me anymore. What is left when EVERYTHING is taken away from you? I am striving to understand that right now. At this time, the thought of my impending death seems like a welcome blessing.

P.S. I'm not suicidal, just dying both physically and emotionally. I guess I'm waiting for my phoenix moment to hit me.

The premise of your question is faulty. If everything perishes eventually it does not make my existence pointless.

Finding life without an afterlife pointless or depressing is as silly as going to an amusement park and becoming so depressed that your visit will end that you sit down just inside the entrance and cry your eyes out. How about running through the gate flushed with excitement and trying to ride all the rides and see all the shows before the amusement park closes for the day? Eat cotton candy until you puke and enjoy your day at the park until the security guard pulls you kicking and screaming out the gates when your day is done.

I think that people believe in God because they yearn for meaning, or hope, or love. Maybe they fear the alternative - living right now, for the here and now too much to do it fearlessly and without regrets?

If you don't already believe in God there is no undeniable proof. If you already believe in God everything is undeniable proof.

But all things DO die and nothing's immortal. I don't see the problem. I was given a religion (RC) as a child and believed with all my heart and mind in Jesus's message and sacrifice. But, as usually happens, in my teens I questioned the power of the church hierarchy and the base behaviour of mankind. It took me years of souls searching and reading to conclude that I need not turn my back on that quest for goodness and perfection, that dream for the "salvation" of humanity that had sustained me throughout my difficult childhood. Now, decades later I am very happy to have been given life, to be a human even with the curse of self-awareness that makes us know we are going to die. When I look at a beautiful flower, it is no less beautiful because it will not last forever. These words you read are uniquely mine. I ihabit this space I displace. I can love, laugh, cry, dance - and I don't need to do it forever - just for as long as I breathe! There's meaning all around you - and mystery and fun and craziness and yes, fear and suffering. But there is a lot less suffering now than in the past - even though there are still wars. Medicine and inter-state co-operation are helping to lessen suffering everywhere. Life is packed with meaning and challenge - go find it!

People tend to believe more out of fear..... It is easy to understand from the uncertainties in live each day that we have too many limitations. Some sort of hope can be derived from belief, when the fear of unknown does not give opportunity to explore the possibility to experience, in its apprehension that the uncertainty may catch up too soon !
Only those who have experience will not need to believe any more, since they now KNOW of their own experience, and fear drops by itself, since they are now 'in touch' with the Ultimate !
Till then this blind groping would end up in only accumulation of negative emotions, as rightly pointed out by you !

No, it would not depress me. I have never really understood why we have the need to think that our existence is any more unique or special than any other form of life. I feel very fortunate to have been able to live as an aware creature. That is gift enough. I don't demand more from my Universe.

I think the activities of our life, the deeds we do and the personal bonds formed would be enough to satisfy us, if indeed we thought "is that all there is". Hopefully so, but having faith in a hereafter is even more comfortable.

You mean there is a point to my existence currently? What are you some kind of bleeding heart hippie counselor trying to keep me from jumping off the Space Needle and aiming for the hugely obese mother of seven, in skin tight sweat pants with "hottie" across the butt, paying for two elephant ears, and a giant milkshake with her foodstamps card, with a Wal-Mart bag hanging over her shoulder, and a tattoo on the small of her back, talking on her cell phone, copy cat clones? Are you trying to stop me?
