I'm purchasing a laptop soon, and want to know what the difference is between the Intel Celeron, Intel Centrino & Penitum 4 is?

I would be using the laptop at home, for personal use. I use Unwired (an Australian cable company) as my internet provider.

Thank you in advance,
nemo :)

Celeron is Intels cheap, mass produced chip. It's the cheapest, so it's put in most computers. It's good quality, but not great. Recently, they came out with Celeron D (an enhanced version for desktops) & Celeron M (enhanced for mobiles.)

Centrino is a newer model of chip used for laptops. It's better than Celeron in quality (speed useage), an enhances power useage, so you get more out of your battery (or so Intel says.)

Pentium 4 is the good quality chip. While they are usually found in desktops, they are also found in workhorse Laptops. They offer good quality & speed to desktops. They are Intels powerhouse line.

However, Intel has recently released their Core line of processors. Then they released their Core 2 processors. Supposedly, as far as Intel chips go (AMD is a different question) the Core 2 Duo is the best overall chip. I believe these are hyperthreaded, but I can't be positive. I believe the Core 2 Duo can be used in Laptops & Desktops.

However, before the Core line, Intel was touting it's Extreme Edition line, which is hyper-threaded. These were also EXTREMELY expensive, so I don't know if this technically is the most powerful, or if it belongs to Core 2 Duo.

As I write this, I realize that it's somewhat confusing, especially since Intel can't seem to stick to a single chip for a long time. I also don't know if AMD actually has a more powerful processor (each company obviously says they do, and even Computer Shopper Magazine can't determine it.)

Good luck with your selection, and enjoy your computer.

first, intel centrino is a brand from intel telling you have laptop things integrated in it like a wireless controller. Now intel celeron and intel pentium 4 are 2 types of processors made by intel. Pentium 4 uses a lot of power and dissipate a lot of heat so they're not the best for laptops. Celeron are the low end of the intel processors. They're a bit better for laptops as they do not use as much power and do not dissipate as much heat. For now, intel released a new type of processors called intel core and core 2 solo and duo. They do not use a lot of power and do not dissipate a lot of heat. For now they're the best processors for laptops but celeron M and pentium M are still quite good.

Celeron is a Pentium 4 with less cache memory on board, Centrino is a brand that Intel uses for notebooks cpu (central processor unit), Pentium 4 is a cpu that will be replaced from the Core2 and Core4.

Celeron is the CPU equilivalent of buying the 4 cylinder engine.
The Pentium 4 is the V8.
Centrino means it has built in capability for a wireless internet connection.
You can still connect it to your broadband by wire or wireless if you have a router with that capability.
