If the Individual is strong within, then it is preferences and attitudes, a bit in minority, such individuals, with better rate of successes...
Usually, people find it convenient to borrow a commonly accepted popular belief, finding it a great effort to focus the mind for too long on any choice. Some great person like Benjamin Franklin or so said "Thinking is the most difficult thing to do, that is why very few do it"
So, with most people, it is perception through popular beliefs, and the unending controversies on even the basic issues are the live examples of it !

Seems that you're asking about the general case when you say "our perceptions". But actually, some people like the way they percieve the world to be in line with the perceptions of others. Others prefer to percieve things however they present themselves to them, and then draw their own conclusions and opinions.
It seems that most people feel more comfortable just adopting a perception or viewpoint, rather than attempting the more idfficult way of creating one's own, from experience.

I pity anyone who marches to the beat of the Masses and does not quest for the truth! Likewise I cannot hold that I am self made or the master of my own fate no matter how I may contend with the matter at hand!
