When Anthony Edward Stark, originally created the first Iron Man armor, it was colored an iron gray. It was later, when he upgraded the armor and coated it a golden color, Iron Man also gained the nickname, "The Golden Avenger". But, I think that the very first suit was the suit used for War machine now. The Iron man gold and red was an upgrade from the war machine suit.

I think you are right... to a point. When Anthony Edward Stark, genius inventor and industrialist, originally created the first Iron Man armor, it was colored an iron gray. It was later, when he upgraded the armor and coated it a golden color, Iron Man also gained the nickname, "The Golden Avenger".

Iron Man, the cartoon character, got his name because he wears powered armor that gives him superhuman strength, virtual invulnerability, flight, and an array of weapons.
The armor was invented and, with occasional short-term exceptions, worn by Tony Stark, an American industrialist billionaire and military contractor known not only for his lifestyle, but also for his incredible ingenuity and inventive genius.

He was enclosed in a metal suit of his own design. I believe that he had a serious heart condition, and only the technology contained in the suit could keep him alive.
