old person here, but I remember when...(54 & still partying the best I can)
It's Youth IS wasted on the young--a fine point but still it's not "shouldn't" which implies anyone has a choice in the matter :)
anyway, it's said because we don't realize what we've got 'til it's gone. Your health, freedom, limitless opportunities ahead, the fun times of youth. It goes away little by little as you age. And, hopefully these things are replaced with some things that youth doesn't have or recognize and as we gain experiences we learn to let go of the things of our youth, gracefully.

because it is only when you are older that you realize how much more you could have done with your life, and those who are young often don't appreciate the time that they've been given.

because they want to be young again bcause we waste the best years of our life and when we should be doing all that we can
