could a microphone preamp be used to amplify a 'studio mic' before plugging it into my computer?

my computer's line in port doesn't amplify it enough or at all so it's too soft.

I don't know but ask someone who really knows because you could blow out something important. A studio mic has its own power source (as it sounds like you know). Are you sure it's working correctly?
