No... they aren't real Clowns... They're usually men dressed up as Clowns.
They do save the Cowboys' lives, and goshdarnit, we need them Cowboys!
As for the Groupie part... Hm... Freaky Rodeo Clowns... Speaking from experience. Haha. :-)

Depends on what you really consider a real clown. For instance, the clown that is responsible for making me a little afraid of clowns would be the dancer Pennywise, from Stephen King's IT. In that case, I would hope that the Rodeo Clowns are in fact the real thing!

Yes, they are real clowns. I don't know if they would be considered "groupies" to the "real" clowns. They are both brave in their own way. One has to face angry bucking bulls, and the other has to face groups of children and make them happy, which is not easy because some children are afraid of clowns.

Real clowns but they don't dress like the one in the circus they wear baggy clothes and face paint, they are there to distract the bull so the bull doesn't hurt the rider when they fall off.
