Of course not all we can do is surmise or speculate on the "whys".There is purpose, everything in creation shows that, but as to why, well we could say it is the old age battle between two powerful forces with each wanting to be the winner. The pawn in the game is you and I and how we choose to live our lives dictates the winner and the answer to the why could be that if we choose the right course to walk then we could all be winners with a wonderful, fulfilling, peaceful life. But then the questions still exists as to "why'.
