I'm trying to do a microwave guide (10.5 GHz, wavelength: 2.85cm ) ..I've been searching and I still don't know if I should do a rectangular or a circular one , please help me to know wich one it's better ( there are also eliptical ones but I don't like those..it may be better but I'm too lazy to look at the theory behind :/, unless you are patient enough to explain it to me ..but it's faster to give me your reasons to choose among a circular and a rectangular one.
thanks!

It depends on how much control you need over your mode structure. Most things one does with microwaves such a coupling to a diode or something require one to know which mode is being transmitted. The problem with a circular or square waveguide is there are, due to symmetry, degenerate modes. That is, orthogonal modes with the same axial wave number and frequency, but different polarizations. They will tend to couple to each other whenever a bend or imperfection occurs, so at the end of the waveguide, you don't know the relative amplitude of the degenerate modes. That's why folks usually go rectangular. If, however, minimizing power loss is your primary concern, a circular waveguide has the lowest surface area for Ohmic loss for a given band, go with it.

Basically it all comes down to 2 things:

1. Available space
2. Cost

Either rectangular or circular or oval will work. Also, "Theoretical Efficiency's" may not pan out in the "Real World" ;-)

Elliptical. Rectangular or circular are a lot harder to shape around the corners
