I have a new laptop with 1 gig memory. However, my desktop is approximately 5 years old with only 128 MB. I would like to add 512MB. Is this an expensive endeavor? Can a novice like me install the card? Is the card universal or do I need to order from the comapny (Gateway) of which I made the purchase? Any suggestions?

First of all you will need to check and see what kind of memory you need. NO it is NOT universal. Check with gateway and they should be able to tell you what kind of memory you need based on the model of your PC. It is very easy to install and it depends on what kind of memory for the price. Most of the time the older memory costs more. You can also take your model number up to your local computer store and they should also be able to tell you exactlly which memory you need and if you are adding more than one stick of memory if they will need to be matching pairs as many older ones require.

Yes it is easy to do and not that expensive. You need of course to find out what type of RAM your computer uses, it should be in the product manual of your Gateway, or you can go to crucial.com and use their memory tool, just don't buy it there they overcharge.
