My old home was made with oak beams and studs. The studs in the walls are closer together than the present standards. Horsehair insulation was originally used (not as effective as roll) and plaster walls and ceiling that dry out and fall apart compared to drywall. My home is not exactly square either (just a little off).
Hope this helped.

Way back when people also used to use cypress for the beams, studs, etc. in houses. Now it it pine. Both are soft woods, but cypress is more resistant to termites. Plaster vs sheetrock. No particle board c$!p in the old houses. Cost wise, no idea. Insulation--I've heard of newspapers or horse hair or none in old houses. Roofing--terra cotta tile or metal or asbestos (maybe). Now seal tab or metal.

lots of prefabricated materials now as opposed to real solids; with compressors available in variety of sizes, nailing and painting are finished in much shorter time, cost continues to rise for materials and labor, these are all i can think of quickly

Like comparing a toilet paper to stationary: plain and flimsy vs. elegant and sturdy.
