There is a good chance it's a hydraulic lifter thats not up to par. The best fix, if that is what it turns out to be is a new set of lifters. I have a 1966 Satellite with a 383 and when it's cold, a lifter clicks. It goes away after the engine warms up. Another clicking sound is made when you have an exhaust leak because of a cracked exhaust manifold or leaking manifold gasket. I would avoid putting an additive in the oil. I've tried it many times before and most of the time it doesn't work.

How long ago did you change your oil? You could have a sludged up hydraulic valve lifter, - which in turn makes the rocker arms "clack"! If it has been a while on the oil, get a can of "Marvel Mystery oil", and put it in the crankcase (a pint is enough, - but a quart won't hurt). This will de-sludge and clean out gunk in your engine! --Drive it about 3 hundred miles, and then change the oil & filter (hopefully, the "click " has gone away by now!) -put in a good oil additive like "alemite CD2" which will further clean out the oil system in the engine. When next oil change time comes up, you can change the oil at the normal intervals, - (which sould be about 2-3 thousand miles), this engine "works" the oil over pretty good, and gets it full of impiurities a lot faster than a "plain old "snail car engine"!

I have a 72 charger with regular 383 in it!

The ticking you hear is probably from a dirty hydraulic lifter. Is it clicking? Or a loud clacking noise? You can remove the valve cover just to make sure you didnt break a rocker, but then the engine would have a miss in it. Or, you can try changing your oil, maybe use a lighter weight oil so to flush the dirt from the affected lifter. I would add some Marvel Mystery fluid in the crankcase as well, sometimes this will quite the lifter. But the only real fix is to replace your lifters.
good luck......

It could be a lifter..or a number of other things. There are a number of good products out there now that you can add right to your crankcase to quiet it. I was having the same problem with my 94 Eclipse and thankfully it worked. We used Lucas Oil Additive. If that doesn't work, sorry my friend, I would choose a reputable garage.

69 383 charger has it got hydraulic or solid lifters in it. anyways if it hydraulic you more than likely have one leaking down add a quart of marvel mystery oil to it. but drain a quart of oil out then add it. if its solid lifters then you can adjust it out.

To find out where the clicking is coming from get about 4 feet of broomstick, put your hand over one end and press your ear against your hand while holding it against the valve covers, fuel pump, distributor, etc. The backyard mechanics stethascope. Hope this helps you pinpoint where the noise is coming from. (Make sure the engine is running.)

I've heard of this problem before, it's nothing serious, but it is annoying, don't worry, I think it can be fixed pretty cheap at a local shop. Also 69 Charger, nice car, man i wish i had one!

You need to ajust your valves.I think the ajustment is .010 on the intake, and .013 on the exhaust.
