I remember going out the drive in on Saturday nights, back in the late 70's. We always had a blast. Now those good times are gone. What happened?

I wish I knew. There is one here I Fresno, Ca. where I live that is just sitting empty and not being used accept for on afternoona week that they have a swap meet. The main thing is that peole in this country just don' aveh enough of a sense of history and nostalgia tokeep such things around. Too bad too, some of my only normal childhood memoriea are of dirve-in's. We need to start a push to bring them back...complain to city councils, movie companies...anyone until someone finally starts to bring them back , even if its only to shut us up...

Drive-ins lost their popularity to MULTI-PLEXES. Back then, when drive-ins were hugely popular, you could still go see a movie inside, but usually only had ONE choice, wereas the cheaper drive-in played 2 or 3 movies a night! Then, theatres started being built with 2 screens. Suddenly, 3 screens! Then BAM! 15 screens!!!!!!!!! People stopped going to drive-ins. They closed down, one by one, until only a few remained. Nowadays, there are about 400 drive-ins across America as they are becoming popular once again! ;-) YaY! My closes drive-in is in Blue Ridge, GA. It cost $5.00 to see 2 movies. The snacks are cheap and delicious plus you can bring your own!

Real estate. In California, the land was way more valuable than the income the drive-in theatres earned, so they did away with them. For a while, people showed a preference for walk-ins. Now a lot of people watch movies on DVD at home. The trends keep changing.

I miss the drive-ins.

We still have a drive-in theater in East Texas. It actually was built only a couple years ago. I think they got the idea that we miss the good old days. I think so many closed because the walk-in theaters had a surge in popularity; climate controlled, no mosquitoes, and your kids aren't going to stumble on a couple having sex, lol.

People started getting robbed and stuff was getting stolen at the drive ins. Basically alot crime at the driveins so they were closed. There are still a few, but it'll never be like it was back in the 70's.

I know! Its awful! Everything that used to be good and simple and fun is gone! Remember when we could just climb in the back of the truck and go somewhere? It sucks. Our freedoms are shrinking every year here in the land of the free.

There are still a few left, one in Midtown Tn.

There are still between 200 & 300 drive-ins scattered around the country and have actually been increasing in recent years.

The movie industry figured out how to make more money by getting rid of those treasures and setting up these huge multiplexes. I miss the good old drive in party scene myself.

I don't know what happened, but I'm with you on missing these theatres. They were so much fun. You could pack a picnic or buy from the concession stand during intermission. They should bring them back.

yeah I don't know, those were fun times weren't they? Our local drive in screen got hit by lightning twice and I guess they gave up after that. maybe they got tired of people stealing the speakers, or the advent of vcr's killed the "market"...
