Im trying to get rid of my pleco and would like to replace with some sort of algae or waste eater/bottom dweller. Any one have experience or preference they could share with me so I have more info to base my decision on?
They would only be with Neon Tetra's. and three plants. 2 live, 1 fake.

sorry I forgot to mention, I prefer them not to get larger than 1 inch or about due to my tank only being 5gallons.

I recommend ghost shrimp. They are fun to watch and clean REALLY well. For a 5 gallon I would only get one as with any more then that they will starve.

Dont use snails as most snails will eat live plants without a second thought. Also, you never know if the snail you get from the store is already pregnant(this happened to me)and if she is....you dont wanna know how INFESTED tank can get with snails like mine did. Well, at least my tank was REALLY clean....and covered from wall to wall with tiny brown dots(snail babies). NEVER get Ramshorn snails too even if you are sure they are not pregnant. They are asexual and can have offspring without a male.

Ya, so pretty much....go with ghost shrimp. Or Otocinclus Catfish, they are really small schooling catfish and good algae eaters. Also UBER cute....hehe

Shrimp are certainly the more active and interesting of the two and a couple of ghost shrimp would fit quite well in mini-tank like this. I would stay away from snails in a tank this size altogether.

if you go with snails try to go with different breeds as they will multiply and take over the tank. try to stay with a bottom dweller perhaps a little catfish.
