I run windows xp with service pack 2 and just installed a USB 2.0 pci card. Under the device manager everything checks out (drive is correct and device is working properly), but when I plug in a usb device (my camera or gig memory stick) the only thing that happens is my computer freezes.

What is the problem? How do i resolve it?

Once you've ensured the card is absolutely installed correctly, you can try to disable other usb adaptors (including on-board) to see if it's not a simple conflict.

If it still doesn't work, trying the card in a different slot or even trying a different card might be a good idea.

You might check Windows Updates since you installed a new 2.0 card. I did that to mine a couple of years back - There was something on the MS site regarding that... you may go there and research it..... I think I had to tweak something.......can't quite remember - but I know I just didn't stick in the card and that was it.... go to the MS site and search "install USB 2.0" and see what comes up.......I hope you're not running this with 256 of ram......

you're able to be able to somewhat have a hardware difficulty. Your terrific guess is to open the pc and do away with all pointless hardware like soundcards, extra drives (exceptthe ones you actual could desire to place in domicile windows) and the different extra enjoying cards which incorporate community enjoying cards or modems. attempt installation back and notice if it keeps any further. If it completes, you may attempt including the enjoying cards back in one at a time and attempt powering up the pc and notice if windopws recognizes them or has any themes getting them to artwork. stable luck!

If your computer hangs or reboots while you are working on it , it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yk5zpr

Try it without any firewall or spyware. When it works you know who to uninstall.
When the same thing happened to me a program named "Buffer Zone" was to blame.
