Apple snails lay their eggs above the water line so if they were in the water they weren't apple snails.
Anyway, I like them and they come in so many different colors including blue and magenta. They also need a male and female to reproduce unlike many other types. Here's a website can can teach you all about them, http://www.applesnail.net/

This is a great question! Do you have them or are you thinking about getting some? I purchased about 10 of them because they are real pretty and have that nice shiny brown shell. However, after a month or so i started to notice little white spots on my glass. At the time i didnt think anything of it. The white spots eventually became so dense i could no longer ignore them. I found out that they were Apple snail eggs and they are nearly impossible to scrape from the glass. So, do i think they are interesting? Yes, they are great-as long as you dont have them in YOUR tank.

Slugs are kinda cute, but I never heard of apple snails.
