Mine hopped, and I moved the legs. But I mainly made them hop. I guess maybe because it was easier to get to the point instead of having barbie and ken with his fabulous plastic hair, actually 'walking.' I miss my little kid days when that used to be so fun, I still have my Barbie Dream House, I just can't bear to let my barbie stuff go..

They did both, I found a way to have them walk... how you held them (at least the older dolls were that way, back in the 70's), I don't know about now-a-day dolls.
What always seem to have bothered me was when I had a two story "play" house, and there wasn't any stairs up, they had to fly or jump up to the second level.... lol.

You posed them with one leg forward in a walk position and then moved them forward turning left and right. Mine never "hopped."

It depended on how much of a hurry 'they' were in!! Sometimes it was a nice leisurely stroll and I moved their legs but sometimes they could hop (or fly!) really fast...

They hopped. Or they levitated above the ground getting to the place they needed to.

Mostly they hopped, but occasionally they would actually "walk".
