As a carpet cleaning technician myself for 20 years, the answer is no. Carpet cleaners make more money than people realize. Especially on over sales such as protectants, deodorizing, repairs, etc, which is generally a commission of the oversales or the total of the entire job.

RE:
I hired a professional carpet cleaning company. Was I supposed to tip the men who cleaned my carpet?

There are two reasons for tipping someone.

1. If the person is providing you a personal service, such as a hairdresser, manicurist, waitress, etc. and is paid with the expectation that his/her pay is augmented by tips. This gives the service person an incentive... the better the service, the better the tip.

2. If the people you have hired to do work for you (such as carpet cleaners or a cab driver) has to do extra work than was originally requested. If the carpet cleaners had to move more than a few pieces of furniture, or the guys who work for the lawn service did an especially nice job, a tip might be ok IF the company you hired allows it. However, I've found that offering a can of cold soda to thirsty guys is also appreciated.

My father in law used to hire migrant workers on his farm. He sent their monetary pay to the company he hired them through. However, he wanted them to work hard in his fields, so he gave them special hot peppers and melons he'd grown for them, and had cold drinks brought out throughout the day in addition to water.
His philosophy was to treat his workers as he would like to be treated.

Some companies pay the carpet cleaners commission and some don't - I know many of them make around $15/hour and tips are appreciated. Especially if your the ones living in a million dollar house with brand new cars in the driveway you should definitely tip, the carpet cleaners work very hard and if you want the best results everytime then be sure to tip or they will think your a snobby rich person with no heart.

My husband used to clean carpet, and I worked in the office of a carpet cleaning company. Tips are EXTREMELY rare for carpet cleaners. Usually around the holidays, they got a little, but these guys work on commission. You don't need to tip them unless they went above and beyond for you.

If you did most of the prep work, no. But if they busted thier backs moving heavy couches and a piano or two...yes.

No big foul, and they probably aren't p1ssed, but a tip is always nice.
