I know you can't fly from the US to Cuba directly. I would like to fly from San Francisco, but that's not the point. I'm looking for cheap tickets / easy way to get there. Going through Mexico with Mexicana seems to cost an arm and a leg, so I am looking for better alternatives or airlines. Thanks!

Actually, you CAN fly to Cuba from the US. There are flights from NYC and Miami, however they are only for approved travel. (Like family members going to visit every three years, cultural or educational exchanges, etc...) These flights are the only legal way a US citizen can travel to Cuba.

If you're looking to bypass the law, then travel on whoever is the cheapest airline to Mexico or Central America, and then buy a ticket from there to Cuba on Cubana. Keep in mind, that the US is enforcing the travel ban and that they have immigration officials at most major airports watching these flights looking for violators. I wouldn't go if I were you. There's a reason we don't have relations with Cuba.

I don't know what you mean by SF, but you can always fly into the Dominican Republic SDQ and take a plane from there.

you can not go to cuba if a citizen of the usa. if you are a us citizen, you must obtain approval. this country is sanctioned.
others citizens of other countries can travel there because they do not have sanctions. You can go to GITMO or Guantanomo Bay.
