Looking at my 2007 fall USC application I noticed that it asks many things such as extra curriculars, essays, etc...yet at one point it asks to list any special merits or awards received. This part got to me cause I dont think I have ever received any big awards or anything. i'm cool on every other line but not this awards/merits line on the application. Therefore I should look into receiving and attaining some of these awards. So what kind of awards you know? Where can I find out of awards that are "up for grabs" hmmmm?

Have you made the Honor Roll? Joined the National Honor Society? That's a good place to start. You can also start participating in essay contests for scholarships and whatnot. Your guidance counselor should be able to provide you with information on applying to these essay contests. Also, check your local newspaper's Education section for more information about upcoming contests that you might be able to enter and place in.

You could also start participating in the Science Club, Math Club, Academic Decathlon, Debate Club, etc. for the chance to participate in competitions where you might win awards.

Good luck!
