The intelligent Americans already find them socially acceptable whether they obtain equal rights under the law or not.
I am one of them.

First off, the idea of "mainstream America" is a political fallacy. America is a diverse collection of people with different beliefs and social values. Some segments gather together to make their voices heard, but even in those segments there is dissention.
Gays are more socially acceptable than they were 30 years ago. Even in the last 10 years, social acceptance has grown as can be proven by the greater instance of gays represented on television as well as by polls of college freshmen indicating their acceptance of gay marriage.
So yes, in time gays will gain social acceptance. However, there will always be a segment of the population that teaches their children hatred and judgment that will never accept homosexuality. Currently, we call them Republicans.

I, for one, don't give a bloody damn what any stranger finds acceptable. That's kind of the point of the legal protections: you can think whatever you want, as long as you don't act out on hatred and cause harm to other people. I'll think your narrowmindedness is unacceptable, but I'm sure as hell not going to harass you, refuse you employment or housing, or physically assault you if you can express your opinion in a mature manner.

I don't care if "mainstream America" does or not.
That's not the issue!
Mainstream America is fully of Pop Stars who have 55hr marriages, unfaithful marriages, child molesters, bigots, hate mongers, murderers, theives, rapists, tax evadors and TELEVANGELISTS!
For some weird reason... NONE of that appeals to me.
So, no thanks..I'll take my Human/Civil rights and leave you jerks to destroy yourselves...Thank you very much!

when the next generation that is much more diverse takes over, we will have made alot of progress. they are more open-minded and more understanding and took the time to get to know us as individuals. I see it happening but not until the baby-boom generation is out of here... with the exception of the few that are very supportive like my pareents and Betty Degeneres!

Society will have no choice. Our future are the children of today and most of them are being raised by two mommies or two daddies...heterosexual marriages will be extinct one day because straight men can't keep their main brain in their pants. We will be majority in marriages in time and then we'll ask you....the same question..
