if you read the da vinci code the suggestion is that it is not a woman but da vinci himself and he is smiling as he got one over on those who didnt believe in the higher power of the woman. The back ground is lower on one side and is supposed to represent male and female and there is loads of thoughts that there is a hidden meaning in that painting!
