Speaking as an Australian living in the USA I think I understand what you're getting at but you are going about asking it the wrong way. Most people here are the same as anywhere else and actually many are very nice but I must say that the things they are told and many believe are a bit over the top. Like that Bush is the leader of the free world...I wonder if anyone in the free world got to vote for him...umm no. Or that Americans have the right to do anything they like to anyone..umm no. Or that Americans are the best at every sport..umm HECK NO. A lot of this is actually on tv often here so it cant be a surprise that they believe it. Actually the few people I have talked to about these things agreed with me after thinking about it. Americans are a little insular also....they dont really know very much about other cultures and places. BUT having said this I have met some lovely people here who would give you the shirt off their backs (literally) so all in all I think the common Americans are good people...if misinformed sometimes. By the way...asking a question like that is sure to get them angry and you are then ensuring they never think any better of anywhere else in the world. Just a thought you might like to ponder.

Evidently I am to assume you are not American. In that case if I were you I would make a concerted effort to find out for yourself. If you are basing your opinion on the media I would disregard it as most of European media has a hardon against the good old U.S.A.. I have two sons in the Air Force in military intelligence (an oxymoron) and a son-in-law in the Army currently on his THIRD tour in Iraq. I am a former Army Ranger, so asking me most probably will not help you out on this question since I am biased patriotic. I will say that having moved from the South to Pennsylvania, that per capita the northern states have a proliferation of Assholes as opposed to the more laid back and polite South. The North also has a larger degree of immigrants with varied cultures that have to assimilate into our melting pot and this has not always been met with open arms. I suggest if you were to come here, go to the smaller towns and hamlets to make a personal educated evaluation as to whether we Americans are assholes or not. It's like anything else in life, do you base your opinion on innuendos and rumor or do you strive to gather the facts and make your own determination.

I hate to think that you actually believe that. Maybe it is time for you to come to America and decide for yourself. Of course, just like in any country we have a few bad apples. But, most Americans are caring, giving, and we welcome people from around the world. I'm not sure what you are watching, and I am assuming that you understand television is for entertainment purposes only. For a more accurate depiction of Americans, find footage of the OKC bombing and the Twin Towers, and notice that everyone was helping someone else. They didn't stop to ask are you American. We are a great nation, we always will be, and I am sure once you have visited us, you will agree. So, here is your invitation to join us, have fun. Then come back and tell us all if you still need to ask that question.

Many are, but so are many people everywhere.
A lot (most?) current TV shows have a certain tendency to model bad behavior. Anyone watching our TV shows would certainly draw some very unfavorable conclusions.

Hey, I think South Park answered this one best. 1 out of every 4 Americans are idiots.
Reality TV seems to draw them like flies.

No.... in fact, most of US can't stand the assholes on TV, either. What the heck is happening to television? It's hard to find anything good to watch any more.
