the jumper have to be set properly

the original should be set to either master, set it to slave to put it in the second position on the cable

the one on the top has to be set to master
and the bottom slave

:)NA

then the very end of the cable has to go to the top and the second get the second.

and don't forget to plug in the power to both

Check the back of the new DVD burner and make sure that the little plastic jumper in the back is on the 'Master' or 'MA' pins. The other DVD drive should be set to 'Slave' or 'SA'.
If you are still having problems, then maybe the cable is bad. Most of these EIDE cables are poorly constructed. Remove the cable, straighten it out a bit (make sure the plastic EIDE connecters are not loose) and then re-attach the EIDE cable.
Check the power connectors for both drives too.

Check the jumper settings on the back of both drives. The first optical drive on the IDE ribbon wire should be set to the "master" position. The jumper on the second optical drive on the same IDE ribbon wire should be set to the "slave" position.

only thing i can think of if you are sure the jumpers are right, is to reset the cmos and load bios defaults ... make sure you write down everything in ur bios settup before you do that if you are not sure about the settings... i would dsay its possible the new drive is bad ... is there another drive you could try to see? .. also make sure the power leads are plugged in and that maybe a pin didnt get pushed back in the connector ...

The DVDchronic could be grimy, attempt making use of a cleansing disc (found the place you need to purchase sparkling CD's/DVD's ex: CompUSA, terrific purchase, Circuit city). If this does not fix the situation, then you definately could could desire to contemplate repalcing thechronic. verify if your pc remains under guarantee.
