Isnt there a way for a football team to score points by punting or drop kicking the ball through the uprights??

Of course. Doug Flutie retired after doing exactly that -- very rarely used way of kicking a field goal that is similar to rugby.

Punting? no. Drop kicking? Yes. When a ball is dropped on it's long axis and kicked upon contact with the ground or after ONE bounce, if said kick travels through the goalposts and above the crossbar, it is a 3 point field goal.

You can drop kick a field goal or extra point. If it's punted it doesn't matter if it goes through or not. A punt is a punt.

How do they know if it's a punt or a dropkick? Couldn't the team just agrue that it was a dropkick, even if it was origanally a punt?

yes, the drop kick is still in the rules, and legal, though since the ball became more pointed it is uncommon.
