Have been a horror film fan my whole life, but there were only 4 that provided real chills: The Exorcist(1973) note: not good for repeated viewings, though; Blood On Satan's Claw(British, 1970); Deep Red(Italian, 1976) and the lesser known Otsuyu(Japanese, 1997) aka The Haunted Lantern.

"The Haunting" from 1963 with Julie Harris. It is the scariest movie I have ever seen. Gives me chills just thinking about it. Hollywood did a terrible remake in 1999 but it sucked. They changed too many things. It's based on a book called "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

For me the scariest supernaturl movie I ever saw was 13 Ghosts it's probably been about 4-5 years since I've seen it. It scared me so bad that I had to finish watching it the next day in the daylight!!

Poltergiest. A little girl being stuck in a television is scary enough, let alone with weird things coming out of the closet and her mom having to tie a rope around her middle, walk into the closet and then fall through the livingroom roof below covered in weird pink stuff.

I will honestly say number one is Poltergeist. Also the movie, The Gate, I was extremely scared of these movies as a child. I'll add Thirteen Ghosts for a modern movie. The movie was creepy and sick, in my opinion, so I don't watch it either.

The Others. There are no special effects and it's a very simple story but it scared the living bejezzus outta me!!!! 13 Ghosts was also pretty horrifying. Special effects in that one were awesome. If you'd rather have your imagination going wild my vote is for The Others, otherwise if you rely on visuals 13 Ghosts.
